And exciting field of 13 has been confirmed to line up for the 2014 Group 3 BRC Sprint Classic (1350m) at Brisbane’s Doomben Racecourse this weekend, highlighted by several noted performers in winter events.
A two-time Group 1 champion, trainer Robert Heathcote has confirmed a position in the final field of the BRC Sprint Classic for Solzhenitsyn.
Claiming thirteen victories and eleven places from 37 competitive starts to date, Solzhenitsyn was a standout performer over the 2013 spring; unlucky to finish second in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1400m) first-up, and while blocked for a run twice when third in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m), successfully defended his 2012 Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) title when beating Trevieres to the line by nearly two lengths.
While unable to match the late pace of the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) in his only 2014 appearance on April 26th, Heathcote is confident the St Petersburg gelding will be far better for the run, but will have to overcome the wide barrier 16 if any chance of returning to the winner’s circle this weekend.
Heathcote is set to dominate the running of the 2014 BRC Sprint Classic, having also accepted positions in the final field for classy pair Fire Up Fifi and Fillydelphia.
Contesting an impressive record of 12 wins and nine places from 38 competitive starts, Fire Up Fifi was arguably the biggest winner of all 2014 BRC Sprint Classic leading contenders at Wednesday’s barrier draw; allocated the ideal gate 3.
A standout performer throughout 2013, the Bradbury’s Luck mare finished third in the particularly well-contested Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) on November 2nd, before running on for third in the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) most notably.
Securing a similarly impressive record of eleven wins and nine places from 42 starts, Fillydelphia has recorded some decent results throughout her current preparation; unlucky to finish second in the Listed Recognition Stakes (1600m) before strolling home to win the Listed Sunshine Coast Cup (1400m) on January 26th most notably.
Also included in the final field for the 2014 BRC Sprint Classic is well-trialled six-year-old River Lad.
Arguably hitting career best form over the autumn and winter of 2013, River Lad claimed two impressive victories early including the Listed Bribie Handicap (1200m), continuing to build in class and form towards an unlucky second in the Group 3 W.J. Healy Stakes (1200m) on June 22nd.
Also unable to make much of an appearance in the Victory Stakes first-up, River Lad has been charged with the unenviable task of jumping from the awkward barrier 13 in the 2014 BRC Sprint.
Included in nominations for several major events over the 2014 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, Benny’s Buttons has contested a long nine race preparation since re-appearing on track in November, but received a huge boost for success this weekend when confirmed to be partnered by in-form jockey James McDonald.
Returning to impressive form over his five most recent starts, the Refuse To Bend gelding was unlucky to finish second in the Sunshine Coast Cup (1400m), but returned to the winner’s circle when strolling home to claim the Silky Smooth and Speedy Handicap (1200m) on March 29th before claiming placings in both the Listed Hinkler Quality and Listed P.M’S Cup (1300m) most recently.
