The BRC Sprint (1350m) is by no means the featured short distance race at Doomben on Saturday but the Group 3 event will not take a back seat with a particularly talented list confirmed in Wednesday’s final field.
Rock Sturdy was unable to make much of an impact when eighth in the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) first-up on April 18th; however trainer Joe Pride is thrilled with the condition of the four-year-old and is confident he will take priceless benefit from the run ahead of the 2015 BRC Sprint.
Posting four wins and a further five minors through his 12 career starts so far, the Fastnet Rock entire found exceptional condition over an early spring preparation in 2014; winning a pair of Sydney minor sprints and running second to Manawanui in the Group 3 Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m) before taking out the Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m) on September 27th.
While needing some luck in running from barrier 13, Rock Sturdy is sure to receive a gem of a ride from leading jockey Hugh Bowman on Saturday.
Speediness is surprisingly yet to break through for a maiden win at the highest level of racing, but has returned to competition in competitive form this time and will be tough to beat in the 2015 BRC Sprint will James McDonald aboard.
Finishing an agonizingly-close second in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) and Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) most notably in 2014, the Testa Rossa gelding clearly needed the first-up run when eighth in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) a fortnight ago and will relish a step up to 1350m this weekend.
Alma’s Fury has posted several good results since transferring to the care of Tony Gollan last year and will contest the 2015 BRC Sprint second-up.
Securing eight race wins and a further 13 minors through a long and busy 54 race career so far, the son of Refuse To Bend won each of the Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) and Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) most notably through the 2014 Winter Carnival.
Gollan is set to be offered two good chances for success in the 2015 BRC Sprint after also confirmed Gundy Spirit in the final field, who is treated particularly well in the weights at just 54kgs and will leave from the ideal barrier 6.
Returning for fifth in a minor over 1200m on March 28th, Gundy Spirit never appeared in doubt when returning to the winner’s circle in the Garrards Handicap (1350m) on April 11th and continued to lay a great account for himself when third in the Listed Prime Minister’s Cup (1400m) last time out on April 25th.
